Our Hair
to hippies everywhere, and the hair war of the 80's...

Society don't want our hair,
They criticize the things we wear.
Disciples wore their hair like ours,
And they were good and right and fair.

Can they ever understand,
The human heart, the human hand,
What it's like to just be free,
The way we know that it should be?

Our hair is a symbol of our living,
A brotherhood that we all share.
We know we've got the right to freedom.
I wonder if they even care.

Back in '76 they wore it,
All tied up and white.
And they also stood for freedom,
Perhaps this will shed some light.

Citizens of Evermore,
Tell them of the love we share.
We know that they can't stand our hair.
Why won't they learn what we stand for?

Written in 1987, this is one of the oldest of my works still in existence today. I was just 21. I still have long hair today. :)

Aaahh... I was two years out of high school in 1987 ... Michael Jackson was still pretty much black...lol. I still wear my hair long too... was it a symbol of our gypsiness? a symbol of desire for freedom? (whatever the hell that means?) perhaps, a desire for lack of constraint

... in any case, something about short hair was always too militant to me...maybe it's a generational thing, but I look around me and don't think so.
